How to choose a reciprocating saw: wood, metal and which blades

A cordless reciprocating saw for demolition, cutting pipe and pruning branches: what to look at, which blades to stock, how it differs from circular saws and chainsaws, and how shops should stock it.

Short answer
  • A reciprocating saw is also called a sabre saw: the blade moves back and forth, so it handles demolition, cutting metal and plastic pipe, timber with nails in it and pruning branches.
  • LEIYU's reciprocating saw is the XLY-01-18: brushless motor, 2800 strokes per minute, 1.725 kg bare, supplied with two 4.0 Ah batteries and a case.
  • It takes the common universal-shank reciprocating saw blades sold in shops; 4 common blades come with it, for metal and for wood.
  • How deep it cuts depends on the blade length. For straight, clean cuts in boards use the XLY-150 circular saw; for thick timber use the XLY-205 or XLY-305 chainsaw.
  • The battery fits every LEIYU 21 V tool; 5 units per carton.

What jobs does a reciprocating saw do?

The blade of a reciprocating saw moves back and forth: one hand on the shoe at the front, the other on the trigger, and it reaches into corners, between pipes and up ladders. The usual jobs: taking out old doors, windows and partitions, cutting steel, copper and plastic pipe, sawing old timber with nails in it, and pruning branches. Demolition crews, plumbers, air-conditioning and equipment technicians use it most; orchard and landscaping customers prune with it too.

What to look at

Stroke rate: how many times per minute the blade goes back and forth; the higher, the faster it cuts. The XLY-01-18 runs at 2800 strokes per minute with a variable-speed trigger: press lightly to start the cut, then speed up once the blade bites; slower is easier to control on metal and plastic pipe. A work light lights up the cut line.

The shoe: the plate at the front rests against the work, so the saw doesn't jump and the cut stays straighter. Changing blades: the blade clamp is tool-free; twist, insert and it is done, no hex key needed.

Weight and motor: the XLY-01-18 weighs 1.725 kg bare and is short enough to cut branches and plastic pipe one-handed. A brushless motor has no carbon brushes, so the same battery lasts longer; if the blade jams or the saw runs at full load for a long time, it stops itself to protect the motor and battery.

Which blades to stock?

Half of what makes a reciprocating saw good is the blade. Coarse-tooth blades cut wood fast; fine-tooth blades cut metal pipe and angle iron with a flat edge and fewer broken teeth; for demolition, where timber often has nails in it, use bi-metal blades that cut wood and nails together; plastic pipe needs a fine-tooth blade for a clean edge.

How deep it cuts depends on the blade length: on the same saw, a longer blade cuts thicker material. For pruning, choose a longer wood blade.

The XLY-01-18 takes the common universal-shank reciprocating saw blades sold in shops, and 4 common blades come with it, for metal and for wood. Blades wear out, so a shop that sells the saw should keep the common ones in stock: customers pick them up with the saw and come back when they run out.

In short: for speed and reaching into tight spots, a reciprocating saw; for straight, clean cuts, a circular saw; for thick timber, a chainsaw. The XLY-150 is a 150 mm circular saw with a 56 mm maximum cutting depth and 0 to 45° bevel.

How to pair batteries?

The XLY-01-18 comes with two 4.0 Ah batteries and a charger: one in the saw, one on charge, so a full day of demolition and pipe cutting keeps going. Any 21 V battery from 2.0 to 8.0 Ah fits; a 6.0 or 8.0 Ah battery runs longer. The battery fits every LEIYU 21 V tool, so the wrenches, drills and grinders in the shop share it.

What should a shop stock?

Hardware shops supplying demolition crews, plumbers and repair technicians: start with one carton of XLY-01-18 (5 units per carton) and keep wood, metal and bi-metal blades next to it. Shops with many orchard and landscaping customers can show the reciprocating saw next to the 8-inch XLY-205 chainsaw: one for pruning, one for cutting timber.
