Which cordless rotary hammer: two modes or three

Two two-mode 26 mm hammers and one three-mode horizontal hammer: which jobs each suits, how to read weight and batteries, and what a shop should stock.

Short answer
  • A two-mode hammer has hammer drilling and chiselling: hammer drilling for holes in walls, chiselling for chasing and removing tiles; there is no separate drilling mode.
  • A three-mode hammer adds a drilling mode for wood and metal, so one tool replaces a drill and a hammer.
  • The LEIYU XLY-26-1 and XLY-26-2 are two-mode 26 mm hammers; the XLY-05-24 is a three-mode horizontal hammer, 2.421 kg bare, 0.205 kg lighter than the XLY-26-1.
  • All three come with two 6.0 Ah batteries that fit every LEIYU 21 V tool.
  • The hammer in the SET-4 kits is the XLY-05-24.

What is the difference between two modes and three?

Hammer drilling: the bit turns and hammers at the same time, for holes in concrete and brick. Chiselling: hammering without rotation, for chasing, removing tiles and breaking small pieces of concrete. A two-mode hammer has exactly these two.

A three-mode hammer adds a rotation-only drilling mode for wood and metal, so a plumber or electrician carries one tool fewer on site. Customers who only drill walls and chase channels are fine with two modes; those who also want to drill wood and metal with the same tool should take three.

How do the three hammers compare?

XLY-26-2SDS-plus, 26 mmHammer drilling, chiselling2 × 6.0 Ah-5 units/carton
XLY-05-24Horizontal bodyDrilling, hammer drilling, chiselling2 × 6.0 Ah2.421 kg-

Weights are for the bare tool without battery; the XLY-26-2 weight and the XLY-05-24 carton quantity are still to be added. All three have brushless motors.

How do the XLY-26-1 and XLY-26-2 differ?

Both posters list the same figures: 26 mm, 0-1100 rpm no-load speed, 0-4800 blows per minute, two 6.0 Ah batteries. The XLY-26-1 switches modes with one turn of the dial, comes with a side handle and weighs 2.626 kg bare. The XLY-26-2 has a mechanical clutch and vibration damping, and a different body design: when the bit jams, the clutch cuts the drive to protect the wrist and the motor, and the damping makes long drilling easier on the hands.

When to choose the XLY-05-24?

The XLY-05-24 has a horizontal body: it is short, so drilling in corners, overhead or between equipment needs less room behind the tool; it weighs 2.421 kg bare, 0.205 kg less than the XLY-26-1. It has three modes, drilling, hammer drilling and chiselling, and is used most by renovation crews and general maintenance. It is the hammer in the XLY-SET-4-600 and XLY-SET-4-1000 kits.

How to pair batteries?

A rotary hammer works under heavy load, so all three come with two 6.0 Ah batteries; customers who drill all day should keep a spare to rotate. The batteries fit every LEIYU 21 V tool, so wrenches, drills and grinders share them. In winter the usable charge drops in the cold, so keep the batteries indoors when not in use.

What should a shop stock?

Building material shops and shops supplying plumbers, electricians and installers: start with one carton of the XLY-26-1 or XLY-26-2, 5 per carton, enough for wall holes and chasing. Shops with renovation crews and general maintenance customers: stock the XLY-05-24, or go straight for the XLY-SET-4-600 or XLY-SET-4-1000 kits, with a wrench, hammer, drill and grinder in one case plus three 6.0 Ah batteries and one charger.
